So, semester two studio starts officially tomorrow. Ive been looking through all my assignment documents and 'stuff' and also drawing on recent events, Ive stumbled across a bit of clarity in my ideas; which will massively help me out this semester.
So, my focus is slightly shifted, but still quite similar.
Using physical objects to connect people/places
I don't like how the use (or, over-use) of technology has taken away the personal, intimate aspects of a shared experience, of communication and interaction. I have no doubt and I do not disagree with the fact that technology has allowed more people to become connected, and I have no problem with this. This is great in so many ways and on so many levels.
But I do feel that the value placed on face-to-face or (what I'm going to call) face-to-place interaction and communication is diminishng with the increased daily use of technological forms of interacting and communicating.
It is a regular occurrence to see a group of friends hanging out together, where at least one of them is on their cell phone, interacting and communicating with someone else in another location. It is almost as if that interaction/relationship with that person elsewhere, is more important and valued than the relationship/interaction with the people (or place) they are actually with.
I have three questions to investigate so far, I'm sure more will crop up, and yes these definitely overlap.
- what connects people to objects?
- what connects people to people?
- what connects objects to people?
I am going to look at these questions in two ways..... physically/technically, and then theoretically/emotionally.
So this will hopefully give me a lot to work with.
woop!
