Pressfield says, under the heading "Resistance and Isolation",
"It is a commonplace among artists and children at play that theyre not aware of time or solitude while theyre chasing their vision. The hours fly. The sculptress and the tree-climbing tyke both look up blinking when Mom calls "Suppertime!""
This is sort of what I want to get at with my studio. The loss of time that is a by-product of being so engrossed in ones pleasure-seeking time, the things people do for leisure. Although here, Pressfield is of course talking in terms of work, and being productive as an artist/maker/entrepreneur, yet throughout the book he talks of this work, as being something you do regardless of external factors, you do it for you, because you want to, because you love doing it.
I am constantly confusing myself though, or maybe its not even 'confusing' myself, but I keep thinking in circles and this is confusing, or at least takes me back to square one though Im not entirely sure where square one is, (see?!), perhaps, maybe perhaps, instead of commenting on 'society', Im commenting on myself.
Perhaps its me that feels like technology is sucking leisure time from my life. Forcing me to view every minute. every second, as a chance to do something amazingly productive, and if I dont, then sheesh! what WASTE of time.
Maybe its just me, maybe Im just exploring this through my studio work, maybe I dont have to relate it to society as a whole. Some people, from results from my survey, seem to not feel uncomfortable by the influences of technology in their world. See it only for the good its providing. And what an optimistic way to be thinking and feeling.
Am I just the pessimistic artist who comes along and yells "too much of a good thing can be bad" at those who are enjoying everything as it is?
Or are these people really just unaware of what I, along with quite a few other people, can see, can feel, can estimate?
Maybe its not even technology....maybe its society...thats influenced by fast paced technology, and so forms its opinions based on the productivity-rating of each activity someone takes part in.
I love climbing trees, and watching the clouds, but if I just popped on down to the Domain and climbed a few trees, lay in the middle of the field and gazed up at the sky for a while....what a waste of time that would be! right?
and now Im unsure that Im even getting this sort of stuff into my studio work. Thats the thing though isnt it...its all about editing. You get all these ideas and thoughts and you read all this stuff and you talk to all these people.....but its the editing. Filtering through all the information, picking out whats important, what youre going to work with, or follow, pursue, look deeper into, take as a lead.
This information rich age is great but it also does have its downfall.
Too much of a good thing CAN be bad.
Pressfield knows this too:
"The professional has learned, however, that too much love can be a bad thing. Too much love can make him choke."
