I read womens magazines on a regular basis. A bit of a guilty pleasure I must say. These are FULL of articles on how to look better, to feel better, to get fitter, to maintain your body, to regenerate it to fix it. Obesity is a real 21st century disease. Our lives are becoming too fast paced and virtually orientated for our bodies to handle. Humans we'rent designed to sit down for hours on end staring at a flat surface of moving and changing pixels, while at the same time consuming 'fast' food so we can make the most of the time we have to spend sitting down watching these pixels. Look at me! Ive been sitting at this computer for hours. I often feel like I am a product of this digitalised society. And it sucks because its so enjoyable!
The internet in some respects, I sometimes feel, has made our lives harder, by providing us with yet another outlet to procrastinate, to waste away time. How often have you looked at the clock on your computer to find that its actually been hours longer than you assumed? It happens all the time to me! You're made to feel that all that you are doing, spending your time doing, is so important and crucial.
I think the next disease of this century could be something to do with internet addictions. If obesity is an issue, then so is the fact that I find it increasingly difficult to convince myself that I really DONT need to check my emails for the 5th time today, or check if I have any updates on Facebook, or read another article on 24/7 Girl, or The Beauty Bible, or see whats new on my current favourite blog, again, or to add another post to my own blog.
Its a real problem. It affects me on a daily basis. It impacts on my life.
Just as obesity started out with a lack of self-discipline and too many easy options, so is my internet addiction.
Id like to think that after writing this I will get off the computer and go to my studio and do something physical, but Im sure theres something else I just have to do before I log off (no!), so it might take me a while to get there.
