systems are go!

it seems, from chats with tutors and peers, that i am in fact creating a system, rather than an 'object' as such; or a small collection of objects that are components of a system. to be cliche by way of a lovely quote from Aristotle, "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts".

i want people to pull these apart, to re-make them, to want to touch them. i want to entice people to play.
the outcomes may not be wearable, thats at the discretion of the person manipulating it.

i am comfortable with this balance of 'sculpture vs jewellery'. pieces can be worn, but there is also the opportunity to create something that does not need to be placed on the body. it is the scale i am enjoying, more so than the attatchement to the body. yet including silver, and other metals, keeps it within the jewellery realm. it gives people (maybe even myself) a way to categorise and relate to the pieces. even though the system doesnt specifically and singularly fit into one discpline over the other.

yet does the inclusion of these metals determine the way a person will put the pieces together? with this scale, will people automatically make pieces of jewellery? or is it the knowledge that i am in a jewellery degree that has so far prompted my peers to create mostly wearable outcomes? what happens when the scale changes? does it matter whether a person chooses to make a piece of jewellery over a piece of sculpture?

i want to make and include pieces that initiate a function, for example a ring shank that can have other components attatched to it, but i also like the idea that these pieces can still be used in ways that are not specifically jewellery orientated.

considering one of the main attributes of jewellery, wearability, it is the act of wearing these that activates them to a second degree. after making and playing it is the possibility of sharing, being able to show someone what you have made by exhibiting it on ones self, and also the act of carrying the system around with you so the freedom to play is constantly with you, that provides a secondary enjoyment.

so i do want this to remain in the realm of jewellery. i just dont want it to be confned to it.
